Process 4 for Project 3:Cyclical Nature of Things / Tree Project

The Life cycle of a human juxtaposed with nature references i.e. tree rings (Years / Time) and the moth wing (Change / Metamorphosis). Using pictures of myself, family members, or Google images (last resort.)

  1. I really enjoy this piece it reminds me of the rings of a tree and the years it takes to grow. I think the silhouette images of people real complement the edge of the piece.

  2. Cool idea and it looks really good so far. It does seem really dark though and I'm wondering how it would look with some color.

  3. Its too small to see the details of the rings, people. I suggest seeking out an actual tree stump (there are even a few on campus) and photographing it in extreme detail.

  4. I enjoy the use of contrast. I'm interested in your decision to not use color, it's very graphic in nature.

  5. You have a really interesting image so far, and a good concept, but it is really dark.

  6. I think this is super cool! if you could make it a bit more obvious that this tree ring filled shape is a moth wing, that would make the idea of metamorphosis a bit more obvious. I'm interested to see what the background will be too, I can't really picture what will be there now.

  7. Strong concept. It does seem a little small? It took me a while to even notice the people. I'm wondering how this image will develop with more images, and I'd also like to see you build the background more? I think it looks great so far.

  8. I'm really drawn to the connection between all of the images being combined thus far. Will you be putting the wing back on the moth? I'm interested to see how you make the shape of the wing/stump relate to the concept and silhouettes. Excellent thus far.

  9. I like how it definitely references "moth" but is not overly literal. I find the idea of combing two different species of nature and finding relationships between them very interesting by itself. Personally I think the humans may be trying to do too much for your concept and the fact that your image is interesting without them.

  10. Hi Sam

Great idea, great process. Not sure the moth shape is important anymore. the tree rings seem to detract from the overall moth wing impression. could there be (or should there be) a transition between rings and the distinctive internal shapes we see in moth/butterfly wings. both are inherently visually beautiful and interesting to look at. how do we clue in the viewer that is a moth? could there be other smaller moth/butterflies incorporated into the image? I keep saying butterflys instead of moths because i think the butterfly is more metaphorical and possibly more visually iteresting-- probably due to my lack of knowlege about moths. If we lose this moth connection, then the shape of the tree rings is negotiable. seems like you approach the canvas with a minimal attitude in terms of how you break up the page, etc. Always a good thing usually as human tendency is to always to fill the page with active surface. The rehtorical question is always am i providing enough for the viewer to sink their teeth into. is the background integrated with the foreground elements? does it need a "background" or environment.

love the tiny images of the silhouettes.the images seem to be in repose, relaxing on a surface they are unaware has other meaning. very interesting metaphor for how we spend our lives unaware of larger (spirtual?) realities.

  11. I think your tree stump probably looks closer to a spiderweb, and agree that you should go take an actual photograph of a tree stump to get that exact pattern. I think the moth shape still reads even with the tree rings' pattern. I would possibly increase the size of the people so they're still just barely seen but not ignored. I'm not sure that the concept of age is being displayed yet but I'm sure it'll get there.
